Raising girls with strong role models to look up to is something every parent wants for their daughter. But it’s not always easy to teach strength unless you are faced with a challenge yourself.

When three-year-old Scout’s grandmother Nonnie was diagnosed with breast cancer recently, her mother Ashley Larson wanted to find a way to distract themselves during her treatments.

As Nonnie’s hair began to fall out, Ashley decided she wanted to teach Scout the meaning of strength and what it means to be a fighter. So she created a photography project featuring Nonnie and Scout and recreated a gallery of historically strong women with little Scout replicating their look.

Ashley said to Bored Panda: “This project has probably taught me just as much or more than it taught my daughter. I truly want Scout to be able to look back at this and know that women are just as strong as any man. And to be quite honest, my fingers are crossed that by the time she’s old enough to understand the strength she’s portraying- women won’t be seen as delicate and dainty anymore, anyway. And I hope that when Scout looks back on this, she is proud of who she is and who she will become.”

What a beautiful legacy of strength and empowerment this family shares.
