Stop playing the B card.
Seriously, I’m going to go ape sh*t on the next person who tells me they’re too “busy”.
JUST JOKES.
But for real, I’m done with “busy” and I’m done with people using it as an excuse.
Take the B word out of your vocab, it doesn’t need to be there.
We’re all busy, we all have stuff going on.
We all have stuff we CHOOSE to have going on.
Lunch meetings, workshops, yoga classes, times with the fam jam, traveling, kids…the list goes on.
Just a few weeks ago, I had FOUR kids under the age of 12 at my house for 30 friggin’ hours…
That meant cooking three meals a day, taking them swimming, driving them around, buying them ice cream (vegan of course) and all the chaos, crying, laughing and beautiful insanity that goes with it.
All WHILE running my business, taking client calls, talking to my team and checking off my personal to-do list.
I’m the kind of person that gets shiz done, and if I can’t, I tell people straight up they’ll have to wait. Without using THAT word.
No one is more special or more busy than anyone else.
Okay, rant over. Whew. #sorrynotsorry
Let’s figure this out so we can start making the world a better place, one less B word at a time.
1. Attitude is everything
When people ask me to do things…which is pretty much every minute of every day…and I’m unable to accommodate…I put a smile on my face and politely tell them I have other priorities and I will give them a deadline on when I can get back to them.
There’s no need to be negative, stress out, or complain…just be honest and positive.
It goes a long way.
Plus, it shows people you can handle your stuff. And you’re not running around like a basket case.
A positive attitude is powerful. It also proves you have boundaries and self-confidence.
I would love to deliver that workshop…
I would love to speak at your event….
I would love to book a call with you…
…. But it will have to be next week because I have a few other things I have to finish first.
Easy breezy lemon squeezy. 🙂
2. Embrace the Power of Radical Simplicity
Maybe it’s time for you to get back to basics.
And re-evaluate what you have going on.
Are the things you’re doing making you happy?
Or do they have you running around all frazzled and out of sorts?
Are you living your best, most authentic life?
If you pair things down, focus on what you love and adjust your schedule accordingly, you’ll have more time for the projects, clients, activities, and people who really matter.
Do a life audit. Take a look at your calendar and look at all your tasks. What brings you joy? What can realistically be eliminated? Or delegated? Or automated? Just WRITING this sentence brings me joy. I go-goo-goo-ga-ga over the process of elimination and automation.
Once you’ve done all of that, BLOCK OFF TIME to just be unbusy. Give yourself some breathing room. I’ve said it before and I’ll keep repeating it. Radical self-care is the key to getting shiz done.
If after you’ve done both these things you still find yourself uttering the B word…go back to number 1 and check your ‘tude. 🙂
3. Find Your Focus
It’s easy to get distracted.
It’s also way too easy to keep saying the word YES, when you should be saying NO.
Especially when you’re first starting out in your biz…you don’t want to turn down work or opportunities.
But if you say yes too often, you’re going to run into trouble.
Focus on what you love and check in with yourself often.
If you say yes to a new client, is that going to cause you to be overloaded and unable to do your best for the clients you already have?
If you say yes to a new project, are you going to feel burnt out within a week?
If you say yes to a new opportunity, are your READY to focus, get down and dirty and really jump in? Is it really what’s best for the future of your biz?
The work will always be there. You’ll be okay.
As long as you take care of yourself first.
Focus on the things that will move you in the right direction.
Being mindful of our time is a process. But I guarantee if you start forming good habits now, you’ll thank yourself down the road. @hayleyhobson (Click to Tweet!)
And you can replace that word in your vocabulary with a better B word. Bodacious? Brilliant? Beautiful? Easy Breezy? Ok, I cheated with that one 🙂
